UH-Hilo takes two from HPU

Michael Higa hit a grand slam and Jeffrey Germain pitched a seven-hitter as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 8-1, yesterday to complete a sweep of a baseball doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
David Chu and Tyan Taiariol each added two hits and an RBI for the Vulcans (11-26), who scored six runs in the second. Tripper Chung had two hits, including an RBI single, for the Sea Warriors (19-18).
In the first game, Courtney Harris hit a pair of two-run doubles in Hilo's 10-3 victory. Dayne Ogawa added three hits and an RBI, and Higa contributed two hits and two RBIs for the Vulcans.
Paul Nishimura hit a pair of RBI singles for HPU.

UH SWEEPS WAC FOE
Kate Robinson hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning as the University of Hawai'i beat New Mexico State, 6-5, yesterday to complete a sweep of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Las Cruces, N.M.
Tyleen Tausaga hit a solo homer for the Rainbow Wahine (40-8, 11-1 WAC). Colleen Kimbro had two hits and two RBIs for the Aggies (22-20, 4-5).
In the first game, Tausaga belted a three-run homer and Tanisha Milca hit a two-run shot in Hawai'i's 7-3 victory.
HILO SWEEPS BYUH
Haunani Haasenritter hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 7-6, yesterday to complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader at the UHH Softball Field.
Leo Sing Chow hit a two-run homer for the Vulcans (32-7). Jana Dewey had three hits, including a solo homer, and Holly Bjork drove in three runs for the Seasiders (15-22).
In the first game, Sarah Weisskopf pitched a two-hitter and Vanessa Badosa had three hits and two RBIs as Hilo won, 9-1, in a game shortened to five innings. Dewey hit a solo homer for BYUH.
GOLF
KONO RISES TO SECOND
Stephanie Kono shot a second successive 1-under-par 70 yesterday to move into second place in the ReBath Heather Farr Classic at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
Kono, a junior at Punahou School, trails Rachel Morris, of Carlsbad, Calif. by two strokes entering today's final round. Morris shot 70—138.
Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident, shot 71—141 and is in third.
Chan Kim, a former Kaimuki High student, shot 70—142 and is tied for 15th in the boys division, nine strokes off the lead.
Elsewhere, Maui's Elyse Okada shot 83—161 and was in tie for 24th, 19 strokes off the lead, at the Ping Junior at Woodlands in Texas. Also, Honolulu's Kristina Merkle shot 86—172 and stood in 43rd, 30 strokes off the lead, at the Mizuno Junior at Braselton, Ga.

GROVE STAYS UNBEATEN
Kendall "Da Spyder" Grove of Maui remained undefeated in the Ultimate Fighting Championship organization with an impressive victory over Alan Belcher of Mississippi yesterday at Houston.
Grove defeated Belcher with a choke-hold, 4 minutes, 42 seconds into the second round.
The bout was part of a UFC pay-per-view mixed martial arts event at the Toyota Center.
Grove dominated the bout, and ended it by choking Belcher unconscious.
Grove improved to 10-3 overall, including 3-0 in the prestigious UFC organization. Belcher dropped to 9-3.
