For your must-do list, coach

By Ferd Lewis

This is a busy week for new University of Hawai'i men's basketball coach Bob Nash.

What with hiring a staff, diving into recruiting and hammering out the language on a three-year contract, getting ready to move into the big office, not to mention chatting with Advertiser readers on Stephen Tsai's blog today, there is much to be done in a short period of time.

After 20 years in waiting, you know Nash has a finger on what needs to be done and how to do it. Still, just so nothing gets overlooked in the whirlwind, here are a few helpful hints, perhaps, for Nash to keep in mind heading into the first full week as UH's coach:

1. Read — and consider — the fine print in the contract.

Athletic director Herman Frazier said at Friday's press conference that you folks had an "agreement in principle" and would finish the contract language this week.

It can't be over-emphasized how important this is. Just think of it this way: The job you have now became available because your predecessor didn't pay full attention to the language in his contract and its portent.

2. Finish the schedule.

With just two openings to fill, just imagine, you could have your 2007 schedule in place before football's is finished.

At how many places can that be said right now?

Beyond that, there is also an opportunity to make a statement about upgrading the competition, something fans and players have looked forward to.

3. "Mister Frazier."

It was a nice and deferential touch at the press conference to call him that, but you've got the job now. You can call your boss Herman.

Believe me, he's heard a lot worse lately.

4. Seating arrangements.

Now that you're running the show, you've got some real pull when it comes to tickets.

Enough, to be sure, to get your wife and family out of section "AA" and into some seats down on the floor.

5. Bobbi Omoto.

Among the people to make sure to thank for the long-time support, if you haven't already, is the basketball staff's Lady Friday... also, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

6. Golden Corral.

For the sake of the players — not to mention sportswriters who occasionally eat with them — it is time for a change in road dining establishments. Whatever good luck was to be found there has long since been exhausted. Time to find a new one.

7. Keep the towel.

It is a trademark and every coach needs one. You could ask Jerry Tarkanian.
