Star of the T-shirt underground Kealopiko has a new batch of designs. Partners Ane Bakutis, Hina Kneubuhl, and Jamie Makasobe took the new line to the Merrie Monarch Festival, where the shirts flew out of the booth. (And at tonight's Kokua Festival, Ernie Cruz and The Girlas will be swathed in Kealopiko.) The new five-design culture-conscious line is called Ku, "because we're going with the Hawaiian seasons," says Makasobe, and includes mano kihikihi (hammerhead shark), to remind people of this Hawaiian 'aumakua during its summer breeding season, and wiliwili, the plant that flowers at the same time as the sharks breed. Perhaps most powerful (and clever) is The Big Five. We're talking the real big five — the Kamehamehas. Kealopiko will be in Chinatown on First Friday. Or e-mail kealopiko@gmail.com. Prices: $18-$34.
DREAM WEAVER
Preternaturally hip filmmaker David Lynch's latest phantasmagoria finally lands in Honolulu at the Hawaii International Film Festival Spring Showcase. Shot in grainy video, "Inland Empire" evades narrative logic. Laura Dern, right, is back in Lynchian form as an actress about to start filming a melodramatic romance. Life and film begin to meld together, and before you know it, there are giant talking rabbits and people dancing to "Loco-motion." Dark, disturbing and puzzling as a Rubik's cube, Lynch is back in gorgeous form. "Inland Empire" screens at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dole Cannery Stadium 18. Tickets available at the box office or www.hiff.org; $10.
