Vierra tosses 5-hitter as Kailua tops Kalani

KAILUA — The last time Kailua High School senior Kili Vierra drew a starting pitching assignment before yesterday, part of his mind was on hitting musical notes as much as hitting spots in the strike zone.
Vierra, the lead singer in a reggae/rock band that performed at a school assembly on April 13, lost his start later that day against Kaiser.
But yesterday, Vierra's mind was totally on baseball and the result was a five-hit, 3-0 shutout of visiting Kalani in a key O'ahu Interscholastic Association showdown.
The Surfriders improved to 7-1 in the OIA's Eastern Division, while the Falcons fell to 6-2.
"I woke up today focused on the game," said Vierra, a 5-foot-8 right-hander. "Last time (against Kaiser), we had the talent show and I was super nervous because that was first time I had to go up in front of the whole school. And then my adrenaline went down (for baseball). I was too relaxed."
Vierra needed the intensity back yesterday, especially after Kalani brought in senior ace Micah Takahashi to pitch the final 3 1/3 innings. Takahashi, a hard-throwing right-hander who has been slowly coming back from a back injury, kept the Surfriders hitless over that span but Kailua already had a 3-0 lead.
"We thought about starting him, but then again we didn't know how long he could go," Falcons coach Shannon Hirai said. "I was hoping our sophomore (Dillon Matsuda) could hold them down before we brought Micah in, but we made some mistakes and we couldn't score."
The Surfriders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after leadoff batter Zack Akamine singled and advanced to second when the ball was misplayed in center field. Akamine then took third on a wild pitch and scored when another errant pitch ended up rolling to the backstop.
Akamine started another rally in the third inning with a single to left. Vierra followed with a single, and the runners advanced on an error. Akamine then scored on Kainoa Uemoto's groundout to second and Vierra came home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Vierra, meanwhile, escaped a few jams with the help of his defense.
The Falcons loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but right fielder Robert DeMarsh snagged pinch-hitter Wataru Noguchi's line drive into the alley to end the threat.
"We had our chances — we had runners on first and second in the first, second and third in the second and bases loaded in the sixth — but their defense made the plays when they had to," Hirai said. "(Vierra) kept the ball down, got us to hit ground balls and fly balls, and he was always pitching ahead (in the count)."
Vierra finished with only one strikeout, but he also only walked two and allowed only two runners past second base.
"That's how we play, we don't have dominant pitchers," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "We let our defense play, and they're expected to make plays."
