Right-turn lane moves ahead

Plans to add a dedicated right-turn lane at the intersection of Keahole Street and Kalaniana'ole Highway moved one step closer Monday when the City Council Zoning Committee approved a shoreline management permit.
The next step is for the full council to vote on Aug. 15. The project costs $3.1 million, with the lion's share going to Kamehameha Schools for the cost of land. The balance will go to pay a contractor to restripe and repave the roadway.
The project, which should start in January, is designed to ease morning traffic snarls. An 80-20 split of federal and state funds will pay for the project.
