The 62nd anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima was remembered in Honolulu yesterday with the ringing of the peace bell at the Izumo Taishakyo Mission in Chinatown.
Two Little League teams from Hiroshima, Japan, were in attendance, as well as representatives from several different faiths and the acting consul general of Japan in Hawai'i, Makoto Hinei.
The Peace Bell — a gift from sister city Hiroshima — is rung every Aug. 6 to remember the horrific atomic bombing during World War II.
Because of the shortened summer, children from the Nu'uanu YMCA this year were unable to bring their 1,001 paper cranes to the ceremony, but Eric Johnson, artistic director for the Honolulu Theatre of Youth, donated paper cranes the theater had been given by those who saw them perform "The Sadako Project" about a girl who lost her life due to radiation after the bombing.
