Safe zone for homeless urged

Advocates say the immediate need for the homeless living on the North Shore is a safe zone to go to, especially when being forced out of an area by public officials.
A North Shore Neighborhood Board meeting, attended by about 100 people, last week outlined short-, mid- and long-term goals for the North Shore Homeless Solution coalition to focus on, said Carol Philips, board member.
The midterm solution is to use available yurts to house homeless, but land is needed for that, Philips said. Finally the coalition is looking to follow a West O'ahu model by building a homeless shelter and transitional housing.
