Faced with the possibility of not having Les Murakami Stadium available for fall practice, the University of Hawai'i baseball team is looking at alternative sites.
The facility is scheduled to have its turf replaced but exactly when that will occur has not been determined. Yesterday, athletic director Herman Frazier said bid specifications were to have been put out "10 days ago" but they had yet to go out.
"I had a meeting (yesterday) and they are still working on the specs," Frazier said. "I'm waiting for the university to get back to us for that. Obviously, they are working diligently to get that approved but they keep going back and forth on that."
Hawai'i Winter Baseball, which had hoped to use Murakami Stadium for its Sept. 29-Nov. 19 season, has announced it will play all its O'ahu games at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu. The Hawai'i Collegiate Baseball League, which had hoped to use Murakami Stadium, instead played at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
UH coach Mike Trapasso had planned to hold fall practices at Murakami, Oct. 10 to Nov. 15, but Frazier said, "I think we will have some (at Murakami) but I'm not sure he will have all of it there. He will have some."
Trapasso had said he had been told installation was tentatively scheduled for the middle of November and would take "four to five weeks." Trapasso said he is looking "at a Plan B" involving other practice sites.
Frazier said plans call for the turf to be ready for play "January at the latest." Spring practice opens Feb. 1 and the season opener is Feb. 22 against San Francisco.
