Priceless? Don't count on it; UH to be 11-1

By Ferd Lewis
Advertiser Columnist

The other day after football practice, University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan and a few teammates graciously made a "Happy Birthday" video for a fan, thus illustrating the lengths these Warriors will go to in an effort to please their following.

The 2007 season should be more of the same as the Warriors light up scoreboards, set records and settle old scores in what will surely be a season to remember.

But if you're counting on perfection — as in 12-0 regular season or 13-0 including bowl — that may be a bit much to expect, even this year.

GAME 1

Sept. 1
Northern Colorado
at Aloha Stadium

No, really, it is Northern Colorado — not Colorado, Northwestern, North Carolina or even North Texas.

But, like Labor Day, two days hence, this one shapes up as a holiday for the Warriors, who are the first Division I-A team to play the Bears in more than 20 years.

The only only pertinent questions entering this one are: How much will quarterback Colt Brennan play? And, what will be the final score?

Keep in mind that Wyoming whipped up on UNC 103-0 in 1949.

UH 78, NORTHERN COLORADO 10
Record: 1-0

GAME 2

Sept. 8
at Louisiana Tech
Ruston, La.

Get past this one and it should be clear sailing for the Warriors through the first half of the otherwise Twinkie schedule.

UH 52, LOUISIANA TECH 24
Record: 2-0

GAME 3

Sept. 15
at Nevada-Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Nev.

The Warriors beat the house like few others in Vegas get to do.

UH 49, UNLV 17
Record: 3-0

GAME 4

Sept. 22
Charleston Southern
at Aloha Stadium

Unofficially it is AYSO Night at Aloha Stadium — everybody plays as the Warriors empty the bench on their last Division I-AA opponent of the season. Good riddance.

UH 72, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 6
Record: 4-0

GAME 5

Sept. 29
at Idaho
Moscow, Idaho

Voting to let Idaho into the WAC was one of the best decisions UH has made.

This game just reaffirms the wisdom of it.

UH 53, IDAHO 14
Record: 5-0

GAME 6

Oct. 6
Utah State
at Aloha Stadium

It is close-your-eyes-time, not because of television but because of the possibility for one-sidedness.

If UH beat the Aggies 63-10 in Utah, you shudder to think what might happen here.

UH 68, UTAH STATE 9
Record: 6-0

GAME 7

Oct. 12
at San Jose State
San Jose, Calif.

Narrow escapes are becoming something of a tradition for the Warriors in San Jose, Calif., where the last two games have been decided by a touchdown or less.

Hold on for another.

UH 38, SAN JOSE STATE 35
Record: 7-0

GAME 8

Oct. 27
New Mexico State
at Aloha Stadium

Clear your calendar for the night and get a babysitter for the kids, because we could be here a while.

Between UH, which averaged 44 passes per game, and NMSU, which averaged 51 last year, and two of the nation's most prolific passers, Colt Brennan and Chase Holbrook, it is a long night for the defenses.

UH 44, NEW MEXICO STATE 27
Record: 8-0

GAME 9

Nov. 10
Fresno State
at Aloha Stadium

Can anything surpass the satisfaction of beating Fresno State so badly 68-37 (in 2006) that Bulldog Stadium emptied out like a disaster alert had been signalled?

Maybe not, but the Warriors will sure give it the ol' college try in running their win streak to 10 in a row over two seasons.

UH 52, FRESNO STATE 28
Record: 9-0

GAME 10

Nov. 16
at Nevada
Reno, Nev.

Ever since the WAC schedule came out, this has been the one to worry about.

And with good reason. Sandwiched between two big, emotional games, Fresno State and Boise, played in a short week (because of a Friday night game for ESPN), on the road and at elevation, it has all the elements of a disappointment.

Nevada 34, UH 32
Record: 9-1

GAME 11

Nov. 23
Boise State
at Aloha Stadium

Their hopes for a Bowl Championship Series berth shattered at Reno, the Warriors rebound in time to take a consolation prize, the Western Athletic Conference championship, sweetened by their first victory over the Broncos in six years.

UH 42, BOISE STATE 32
Record: 10-1

GAME 12

Dec. 1
Washington
at Aloha Stadium

Fittingly, perhaps, the school with the toughest schedule (Washington) and the easiest one (UH) meet in the final game of the regular season.

The last time these two teams played (1973) it was considered a major upset that UH won.

This time it will be one only if the Warriors don't.

UH 48, WASHINGTON 24
Record: 11-1
