Police arrested a 25-year-old man yesterday morning after he allegedly assaulted a 52-year-old man and broke into an apartment in the Young Street area that was occupied by a 61-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son.
The older man told police he was walking down the street about 1:45 a.m. when the younger man punched him behind the right ear without provocation, resulting in a deep cut and a concussion. The man told police the assailant continued walking down the street and broke into an apartment.
The woman who lives in the apartment told police she awakened to the sound of an intruder breaking through her living room window. She said she awakened her son, and the two of them fled to the bathroom, where they locked themselves in. The woman told police she could hear the man inside her apartment throwing and breaking things before he tried to break down the bathroom door.
Officers arrived just as the intruder was attempting to leave. Police said the man instructed officers to kill him, then locked himself in a bedroom.
The man tried to flee through a bedroom window, but police were waiting and arrested him.
