'Aiea suspends 16 in fight aftermath

'Aiea's football team has imposed its own sanctions on top of what the O'ahu Interscholastic Association meted out Monday following Saturday night's benches-clearing fight at the end of Na Ali'i's 33-26 victory over Campbell.

The OIA ruled that both teams will forfeit their OIA Western Division games next week, but are allowed to play their interleague games this weekend.

However, 'Aiea coach Wendell Say said last night that 16 of his players have also been suspended for tomorrow night's game against Saint Louis. Campbell athletic director Sam Delos Reyes said his program "is doing things internally, and for confidentiality we're trying to keep things within the school."

But he added that the Sabers "will not have a full squad" for Saturday's game at Kamehameha.

Say and Delos Reyes said their schools plan to offer counseling — including anger management sessions — to the players.

During the on-field altercation, most, if not all, players from both sidelines ran onto the field, which by OIA and national rules results in automatic ejections.

Initially, 'Aiea's game film was inconclusive as to how many Na Ali'i players rushed the field.

"So we put it to the players, and 21 kids stepped up," Say said.

After film review later, taking into account the punt team running onto the field (it would have been fourth down), that number was reduced to 16.

"They understand what they did wrong," Say said. "Our focus now is moving on."
