The look for holiday 2007 is ladylike, poised and polished. From head to toe there's lots of sheen, but not shine. Subtle metallics rule in clothing, accessories and makeup. While the little black dress will never really go out of style, this is a year to choose gray as a neutral, or look for a jewel tone to celebrate this special season.
While we're outlining five holiday trends, we don't recommend being a slave to seasonal trends — or wearing them all at once. Choose one or two and put them together with pieces already in your wardrobe. It's your personal style that will make the season bright.
CHARMS
Fashion designer Betsey Johnson knows how to work a trend. This charmer (Macy's, $85) can be worn as a necklace or wrapped around a wrist. It's just as fabulous with a daytime skirt and blouse as with a party dress.
SEQUINS
This dress embraces two trends — gray as the "it" neutral and sequins as the "it" embellishment. Sequins are everywhere — but not all over, please; just a splash here and there. This Juicy Couture dress (Rafael, $298) is perfect for a holiday party. We also spotted it at Neiman Marcus in rosy gold.
JEWEL TONES
Ruby, emerald, sapphire, amethyst, lapis lazuli — jewel tones help make the season merry and bright. Banana Republic gets it right with this feminine blouse ($68). Pair it with jeans, a pencil skirt or wide-legged pants, peep-toe pumps and a big belt for office or evening.
A SILVER BAG
As silver bells peal out a Christmas carol, silver bags come out to play. We love this feminine little number by Magid for its subtle sheen and the faux gems that make it sparkle (Macy's, $30).
RED PATENT LEATHER
Patent is still hugely popular, and you can't go wrong with red for the holidays. These peep-toe Stuart Weitzman stilettos (Neiman Marcus, $280) will brighten up any holiday outfit. And of course red is perfect with gray.
