Generally recognized as a legitimate Division I college prospect on a good Division II high school team, Word of Life senior Chanteal Satele again proved to be at the top of her level this season.
Satele, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter, was named Interscholastic League of Honolulu DII Player of the Year for the second straight season after a recent vote of league coaches.
Satele was a focal point of every opposing defense, even against Division I teams in the ILH's integrated schedule.
She had 17 kills against eventual state champion Kamehameha — the No. 4-ranked team in the nation by prepvolleyball.com — 10 kills against Division I state runner-up 'Iolani and seven against Punahou, which finished third in the DI state tournament.
Satele was listed as one of prepvolleyball.com's national Top 100 "Senior Aces" and verbally committed to play for NCAA Division I member St. Mary's (Calif.).
Satele is joined on the ILH DII all-star first team by fellow Firebrand Crystal Powell, Hawai'i Baptist's Kelly Chang, Keisha Miura and Sarah Palmer, University High's Brennan Clark, Hanalani's Janelle Fetui, and Kristina Donathan of St. Andrew's.
Chang, a junior libero, Miura (senior setter) and Palmer (sophomore outside hitter) helped the Eagles capture their first ILH Division II championship. Hawai'i Baptist previously competed as a Division I program.
Palmer had a match-high 12 kills in the title-clinching victory over Word of Life, and had one of the most improbable serving performances of the season.
Trailing Maryknoll 11-10 in the third game of an extremely tight match, Palmer — a left-side hitter — ran off 15 straight service points to give HBA a shocking 25-11 victory to close it out.
The scores were 23-25, 27-25, 25-11.
Palmer notched six aces during her run, which Maryknoll tried to break by calling two timeouts.
Powell is a junior outside hitter, Clark a senior outside hitter, Donathan a senior outside hitter/setter and Fetui a senior outside hitter.
Powell and Satele are the only repeat first-team selections.
Hawai'i Baptist's Myles Shioji was named Coach of the Year.
