Moanalua had many chances but Kaiser was able to convert as the Cougars boys soccer team remained undefeated with a 2-0 victory yesterday at Kaiser Stadium.

Kaiser improved to 3-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East standings and remained as the only undefeated team in the East.

Moanalua is 2-1.

Until Kaiser's Reed Sufrin scored the game's first goal in the 28th minute, the game was mostly played on Moanalua's side of the field.

"We were having trouble finding our footing," Kaiser coach Herb Schreiner said.

"(Sufrin's goal) got the game under control."

Na Menehune had several opportunities early in the first half, including three successive corner kicks. Later, Darren Cabalang's free kick in the 14th minute went wide of the goal.

Sufrin's goal came minutes after a Kaiser attempt was stopped by Moanalua goalkeeper Aaron Haque. Sufrin came down the right side with the ball, maneuvered past one defender and shot past Haque.

John Moats scored in the 50th minute for Kaiser to make it 2-0, scoring on a shot with his body in a sideways position in the air.

"We kind of needed it," Moats, a senior, said. "I was passing it in the air and I hit it with my right foot."

Kelsey Tsutsui's header one minute later off a corner kick went over the goal for Moanalua. Whereas the first half was played mostly on Moanalua's side of the field, the second half went both ways.

"We had lots of opportunities but we couldn't convert," Moanalua coach Spencer Machado said.

Moanalua netted the ball into the goal in the 62nd minute, but the goal was taken away after Na Menehune were called for offsides.

Moanalua's Sean Nicholson had two attempts that just missed in the second half and a corner kick before time expired was caught by Kaiser goalkeeper Keane Ellis.

Kaiser's undefeated record so far this season could be an indication of how the rest of the season will play out. The Cougars have already defeated three of the Red Division's tougher opponents in Kalani, Castle and Moanalua.

GIRLS MATCH

Okihara scored in the 24th and 33rd minutes to put Kaiser (2-0-1) ahead 2-1.

Sara Clapp scored in the 59th minute on an assist by Jody Robinson to make it 3-1.
