Oregon St. rally sinks UH women

Losing is one thing, but University of Hawai'i women's basketball coach Jim Bolla is starting to question his team's desire.

Oregon State went on a 24-11 run to open the second half to beat Hawai'i, 70-57, last night in the finale of the Island Imaging Paradise Classic before 305 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Bolla was most displeased with the Beavers' 29-23 advantage in rebounds.

"This is a team that averaged 32 rebounds and we're taller than them, and we get outrebounded and we only get 10 total rebounds in the second half," he said. "That's something that's not coaching. That's desire and right now we have some players that don't have desire."

Bolla added: "We have people that don't want to go in and rebound the ball."

Ashley Allen scored 20 points and sparked the second-half surge, which put Oregon State (6-4) up 49-37 with 10:55 left.

Allen, who scored seven points in the first half, ignited the run by nailing consecutive 3-pointers, and Brittney Davis followed with another to give the Beavers, who trailed 26-25 at halftime, a 34-28 lead with 17:58 left.

Allen scored 11 points and Mercedes Fox-Griffin added six during the rally for Oregon State, which found ways to get open against Hawai'i's amoeba defense.

"We talked about how to give (Allen) some good looks," said Oregon State coach LaVonda Wagner. "We just tried to screen off the back of the zone and give her a quick look at the basket, and she was able to get it and knock it down."

Hawai'i got as close as five twice, but a 14-4 run gave the Beavers their largest lead at 67-52 with 43 seconds left.

"We've had trouble getting a lead and maintaining that lead and tonight that was our main focus," Wagner said.

Davis scored 15 points and Tiffany Ducker added 12 for Oregon State, which hit 6 of its first 7 shots to open the second half.

Iwona Zagrobelna scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting for Hawai'i. She fouled out with 2:52 left and Hawai'i down 56-50.

Saundra Cariaga added 12 and Megan Tinnin added 10 for Hawai'i (4-5).

Western Carolina won the round-robin tournament with a 3-0 record. Oregon State was 2-1, Hawai'i 1-2 and Tennessee Tech 0-3.

Bolla said Oregon State's nine offensive rebounds extended possessions and led to open looks.

"Our defensive time on the floor on each possession, instead of being 18 to 22 seconds playing defense, we end up playing 42 seconds on defense, then we get lazy and don't come out and challenge the shooters," he said.

The Beavers finished 23 of 50 from the field, including 13 of 22 in the second half. They were 4 of 7 from 3-point range in the second.

WESTERN CAROLINA 74, TENNESSEE TECH 61

Lauren Powell scored 14 points to lead four Lady Catamounts in double-figures. Chevon Keith added 12, Monique Dawson had 11 and Brooke Johnson 10 for Western Carolina (8-2). Kristina Tyler scored 20 points for Tennessee Tech (1-9, 0-3).
