Hawaii well-represented in bowl games

For college football fans, it doesn't get much better than bowl season. If that's not enough, the rosters of participating teams are littered with players with Hawai'i ties.

The 32-game bowl schedule kicks off with tomorrow's San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

Navy (8-4) and junior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (Kapolei '04 of Kapolei) take on Utah (8-4), 4 p.m. (Hawai'i time) on ESPN. Senior center Reyn Kaupiko (Kamehameha '03 of Honolulu) is a reserve for the Midshipmen.

UCLA (6-6) meets Brigham Young (10-2) Saturday in the Las Vegas Bowl. Sophomore offensive lineman Micah Kia (Mililani '06 of Mililani) and freshman fullback Dylan Rush (Ka'u '06 of Na'alehu) are on the Bruins' roster. The Cougars feature freshman tight end Kaneakua Friel (Kamehameha '07 of Kane'ohe), junior wide receiver Saia Hafoka (Kahuku '02 of Kahuku), sophomore defensive lineman Ian Dulan (Kamehameha-Hawai'i '06 of Hilo), freshman offensive lineman Walter Kahaiali'i (Kamehameha-Maui '06 of Lahaina), sophomore offensive lineman R.J. Willing (Kamehameha '06 of Kahuku), freshman defensive back Gary Nagy (Kahuku '06 of La'ie) and junior punter C.J. Santiago (Saint Louis '04 of Honolulu).

Oregon State (8-4) meets Maryland (6-6) in the Emerald Bowl, Dec. 28, in San Francisco. Junior offensive lineman Jeremy Perry (Kahuku '04 of Hau'ula) leads 12 Beavers with Hawai'i ties, including junior Al Afalava (Kahuku '05 of La'ie), who starts at free safety.

On Dec. 30, All-America first-team linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04), freshman offensive guard Kai Maiava (Baldwin '07 of Wailuku) and Colorado (6-6) take on Alabama (6-6) in the Independence Bowl.

California (6-6), with junior defensive tackle Mika Kane (Kamehameha '05 of Honolulu) and sophomore defensive end Tyson Alualu (Saint Louis '05 of Honolulu), has a New Year's Eve meeting with Air Force (9-3) in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas.

The same day in El Paso, Texas, junior center Max Unger (Hawai'i Prep '04 of Honaunau) and the Oregon Ducks (8-4) meet South Florida (9-3) in the Sun Bowl.

Senior defensive tackle J.T. Mapu (Kahuku '02 of Kahuku) and Tennessee (9-4) play Wisconsin (9-3) on Jan. 1 in the Outback Bowl.

Also on New Year's Day, Texas Tech (8-4) meets Virginia (9-3) in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. Freshman defensive end Sam Fehoko (Farrington '07 of Honolulu) is on the Tech roster, but is redshirting this season.

In the first of five Bowl Championship Series games, USC (10-2) and junior linebacker Kaluka Maiava (Baldwin '04 of Wailuku) meet Illinois (9-3) in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., also on Jan. 1.

MORE FOOTBALL

  • City of College of San Francisco quarterback Jeremiah Masoli (attended Saint Louis) was named Most Valuable Player of the California Community College Athletic Association Championship game after he led the Rams (11-1) to a 31-28 win over Mt. San Antonio (Walnut, Calif.) on Dec. 8 in Fresno, Calif. Masoli was 19 of 33 for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 54-yard run in the first quarter.

  • Portland State senior center Brennan Carvalho (Kamehameha '04 of Kapa'a) was named to the All-Big Sky Conference first team.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Colorado School of Mines junior guard Kyle Pape ('Iolani '05 of Hono-lulu) scored 13 points with two rebounds, two assists and a steal in a 76-63 win over New Mexico Highlands (Las Vegas, N.M.) Friday. Pape then scored a game-high 21 points Sunday in a 69-61 win over Western New Mexico (Silver, City, N.M.).

  • Colorado-Pueblo sophomore guard Ken Moses (Mililani '06 of Mililani) scored two points with a rebound, two assists and a steal in 15 minutes of action Thursday in a 88-57 loss to Colorado Christian (Lakewood, Colo.). Moses started Saturday against Metro State (St. Paul, Minn.) and scored three points with two blocks in 19 minutes. Metro State won 81-74.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Gonzaga senior guard Rachel Kane (Punahou '03 of Honolulu) had four rebounds and a steal in 14 minutes in Sunday's 96-73 loss at No. 1 Tennessee. The Bulldogs host Purdue today.

  • Concordia (Irvine, Calif.) freshman guard Nicole Fu (Maryknoll '07 of Honolulu) started in Saturday's 80-74 win over Ohio Dominican (Columbus, Ohio) and scored a team-high 19 points. Fu also had three rebounds, two assists and three steals in 32 minutes.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Washington sophomore libero Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05 of Kane'ohe) was named to the All-America third team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Miyashiro, a 5-foot-7 libero, averaged 5.8 digs per game. It is her first AVCA distinction.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Grinell College (Iowa) sophomore forward Miki Nakamura (Kamehameha '05 of Honolulu) was named to the All-Midwest Conference first team. Nakamura scored 14 goals, second most in the MWC, and her 32 points were third-most in the league.

    MEN'S SOCCER

  • Washington sophomore defender Daniel Phelps (Leilehua '06 of Wahiawa) was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team. Phelps, an Arts & Sciences major, has a 3.62 GPA. Freshman goalkeeper Stephen Fung ('Iolani '06 of Honolulu) was named to the second team. The business administration major has a 3.44 GPA.

    TRACK & FIELD

  • Derek Turbin (Punahou '02 of Hono-lulu) was named interim head coach at Occidental (Los Angeles). The 23-year-old Turbin was an assistant cross country coach last season.
