'Iolani boys basketball coach Mark Mugiishi got what he wanted Thursday night against Saint Louis.

The Raiders played at a fast tempo against one of the bigger teams in the state, and they hit free throws down the stretch when things got close.

Four 'Iolani players reached double-figures, and the Raiders used a quick start to beat visiting Saint Louis, 59-49, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu showdown.

'Iolani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 8-1, a half-game behind first-place Punahou (9-1). No. 4 Saint Louis dropped to 7-3.

The Raiders used an aggressive man-to-man defense and half-court trap to force 10 turnovers and build a 30-13 halftime lead.

"We figured out we're a better team when the tempo is faster," Mugiishi said. "We were able to do that today and it worked to our advantage."

Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said: "We just didn't have it, especially in the first half. Turnovers killed us."

In the first half, 'Iolani was 11 of 20 from the field, while Saint Louis was just 4 of 19.

"Offensively, we put our defense in a bad position. We couldn't score in the first half," Tengan said.

Ryan Dung scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half. Liloa Nobriga finished with 14 points, Case Miyahira 11 and Taylor Mounts 10 for 'Iolani.

Saint Louis' Scott Smith, a 6-foot-7 center, scored just six points over the first three quarters. He finished with 14 points.

"The more possessions we have and the more up and down the floor we go, the less impact the really good big man has," Mugiishi said. "Scott Smith is one of the best big men in the state this year."

The Crusaders closed to 48-43 with 1:48 remaining after a field goal by Kulia Aiona, but Nobriga answered with a three-point play and the Raiders hit 6 of 7 free-throw attempts in the final 1:20.

"We weren't aggressive until the second half," Tengan said. "In the second half, when we got aggressive inside that's when we started scoring. We needed to be that way in the first half, but we were behind so far it's hard to come back against a good ball club like 'Iolani."

In the fourth quarter, Saint Louis hit 8 of its first 11 shots, and 'Iolani committed seven of its 12 turnovers.

"They are just an outstanding athletic team," Mugiishi said. "When they cranked up the pressure we struggled with it. Once we settled down we got to the line and made our free throws."

'Iolani converted 14 of 18 free-throw attempts. In its previous three games, 'Iolani was 38 of 63 (.600) from the line.
