Internment camp lecture scheduled

Chaminade University's spring Fujitani Lecture Program, titled "Fear of the Differences," will focus on experiences tied to World War II internment camps.

The program, set for 2 p.m. to 7 p.m .Feb. 24, will be held at the university's Ching Conference Center, on the second floor of Eiben Hall.

Duncan Williams, a Soto Zen Buddhist priest and professor of Japanese Buddhism at the University of California-Berkeley, will discuss "Japanese-American Buddhists and the World War II Internment Camps."

Tom Coffman will introduce "The First Battle," his documentary on the two years leading up to World War II internment camp years.

The Rev. David Hirano of Central Union Church will discuss his father's internment experience.

The Rev. Dr. Kenneth Tanaka, president of the International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies, will moderate a panel discussion with Hakim Ouansafi, president of the Muslim Association of Hawaii, and UH law professor Jon Van Dyke.

Cost is $20 by Feb. 17; $30 at the door, $10 for students.

WORKSHOPS WILL FOCUS ON DISASTER

A disaster-preparedness workshop has been scheduled to help the faith community serve members and the greater population during weather emergencies or other disasters:

  • 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Central Union Church, with speaker A.J. Lactaoen, author of "911, the Red Book for Emergencies," as well as the Rev. Clarence Liu of Pacific Health Ministry addressing ways to meet spiritual, physical and emotional needs of people faced with calamities. Free.

    Another disaster-preparedness workshop is also planned:
