'Bows split pair in Las Vegas

Advertiser Staff

Junior first baseman Kate Robinson hit two home runs and drove in three runs to lead Hawai'i over Colorado State, 9-5, last night at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic softball tournament in Las Vegas.

In an earlier game, the Rainbows (6-2) lost to Cal State Fullerton (3-4), 3-2.

Robinson's second home run — a two-run shot — came in the seventh and gave Hawai'i an 8-5 lead. An RBI single later in the inning provided the final outcome.

Courtney Baughman got the win, pitching five innings, giving up four runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

In the opener, Richie-Anne Titcomb's two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh pulled the Rainbows to within one, but after a walk, Valana Manuma grounded out to end the game.

Justine Smethurst allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings for UH in a losing cause.

The Rainbows play Mississippi State today.

The tournament runs through Monday.
