All year round, partners go the extra mile to make relationships work, as mothers, fathers, wives and husbands — and when it works the way it's supposed to, it doesn't make headlines. But here in Island Life, we wanted to recognize those unsung heroes of satisfying relationships. As Valentine's Day approached, we asked readers to nominate loved ones for a gentle makeover — a gesture of affection, in the form of a day of pampering and personal attention.

The nominations poured in, proving that there's a lot of love circulating around the Islands.

We chose three women to be pampered and preened and made to feel like queens over the course of a whirlwind Feb. 14.

We followed them as they received facials, haircuts, makeup lessons, manicures and pedicures. Here's our report.

MARLENE BARRETTO

Contract specialist, Army; mother of three

Pampered by: Paul Brown Salon & Day Spa, Ward Centre

The hair: Paul Brown (himself!), began with a semi-permanent color stain "to give her natural color a pop," as well as extra body. He cut off 14 inches of hair, layering it, to frame her face. His "high and low layering" also gave Barretto's hair great texture. Note: Although she originally said the length of her hair was her only "nonnegotiable," Barretto later decided to give in "to the hands of the professionals." (She will donate her hair to Locks of Love.)

The makeup: Gerry Brown (no relation to Paul) went for a "completely natural" look for this busy working mother of three. Eyebrows were waxed and trimmed. A custom blend foundation was created for Barretto's skin tone, set with a yellow-based loose powder. Brown used a monochromatic palette of peachy bronze with a rosy glow.

Bonus: Manicurist Helga Ellis created a special Valentine's French manicure for Barretto, with pink tips.

Must-have products for Barretto:

  • "Diamond Heads" silicone treatment gel — a drop gave her hair an amazing sheen
  • Jan Marini moisturizer with SPF 30 sunscreen
  • A tiny tuck-in-your-bag fool-proof eyelash curler from Japan

The date: Dinner at Assaggio Mililani with husband, Phil Keli'i Barretto, who returns to Iraq Wednesday, the day after his birthday.

Her reaction: "This has been awesome. I'm feeling so relaxed!"

Her husband's reaction: Phil Keli'i Barretto reacted with astonishment to the change in his wife's appearance: "I felt like I was cheating on my wife," he said, jokingly. Their 2-year-old daughter, Trinity, said, "Nice Mama, nice Mama."

    Tips from the experts:
  • When applying eyeliner, use a "connect the dot" approach, rather than one continuous line. Extend the liner slightly beyond the outer corner of the eye.
  • To avoid clumping, dab the tip of the mascara wand onto a tissue before applying it to lashes.
  • When applying mascara to lower lashes, hold the wand vertically.

    MONICA YASUDA

High school English teacher; mother of two

Pampered by: Medical Spa & Skin Care Hawaii and Antoine Beauty Salon

The facial: Aesthetician Linda Shafie applied a Green Peel Treatment. "I feel really tingly and so fresh. I just keep touching my face," Yasuda said. Her skin had a noticeable glow.

The hair: Ces Spinelli, added highlights to soften Yasuda's hair color, and a color shine to make it gleam. Spinelli cut off seven inches of hair and did a lot of layering to add texture and softness around the face. The hair now has a sexy movement to it.

The makeup: Using a brush, Paul Tamaoka applied the slightest amount of gold-toned foundation to Yasuda's already glowing skin. He applied bronzer in a "W" shape, where the sun would hit her, followed by blush. Her lid was covered in cocoa brown, in deeper tones near the lashes, graduating to lighter tones under the brow. He added a dark purple at the outer corners to give Yasuda's eyes a lift.

    Must-have products for Yasuda:

  • Antoine shampoo for color-treated hair
  • Antoine moisturizing conditioner
  • MAC "Spice" lip liner
  • Maybelline Expert Wear Eye Shadow Quad
  • Chanel gloss in a shade called "Magnifique"

The date: Monica and husband Kris Yasuda went out for appetizers, then took carry-out home and enjoyed it after the kids were in bed.

Her reaction: "All of a sudden I got big eyes. I love it! I love it all!"

Her husband's reaction: Kris Yasuda was floored by her transformation: "I couldn't stop staring at Monica, to the point that she felt uncomfortable," he said.

Bonus: Spinelli gave Yasuda a goody bag of hair care products.

    Tips from the experts:
  • Look for a foundation with gold tones, because nine out of 10 people have gold tones. Beware of pinks.
  • Wiggle mascara from the base up so you get a lot at the base.
  • "If you have a round face, very short hair is probably not the best for you. Leave some length, ideally below the chin. Bangs are not a good idea either," said Spinelli.

    LUANA PEAHI

Foster mom to five children; mother of a grown son

Pampered by: Marsha Nadalin Salon & Spa, Kahala Mall

The hair: Marsha Nadalin, (herself!) colored her hair a rich dark chocolate followed by caramel highlights, finished with a semi-permanent gloss. She cut off about four inches and contoured the coiffure with long layers.

The facial: Kristin Akana gave Peahi an Aveda Elemental Nature facial, customized for her skin type. Her skin positively glowed.

The makeup: Sandi Won applied a tinted moisturizer and a palette of warm browns. She added a little purple to the eyelids for a flash of color when Luana blinks. Lips were moisturized prior to applying lipstick for a youthful sheen.

    Must-have products for Peahi:

  • Aveda Tourmaline Charged Protecting Lotion SPF 15
  • Aveda "Hot Pepper" lipstick
  • Hair gloss

The date: The kids chose Denny's, so Denny's it was.

    Her reaction: "I'm speechless."

Her husband's reaction: "She looks beautiful. Thank you. It's amazing to have people care about her that way, 'cause she's always caring for others. The kids were all excited; it was the first time they ever saw her with makeup on. But, hey, I love her with or without makeup. I just love her."

Funky fact: A few months ago, Peahi got tired of hair in her face, so she lifted up the top and chopped it off with one swipe of the scissors.

Bonus: Manicurist Francine Koani painted flowers and added rhinestones to Peahi's tootsies. She was sent home with a goodie bag of hair and skin-care products.

    Tips from the experts:

  • When you make a boo-boo, put moisturizer on a Q-tip and lift off the errant eyeliner or shadow. If you try to wipe it off with a tissue, it can make a bigger mess.
  • When hair color changes, eyebrows need to be tinted or made up to match.
  • When applying blush, use a large, fluffy brush. Dip the brush in the blush and blot it on a tissue to remove the excess. It's easier to add color than to remove it.
