Baseball 'Bows finish off Santa Barbara, 9-2

Advertiser Staff

Josh Schneider pitched seven strong innings and Jon Hee had three RBIs as Hawai'i walked over UC Santa Barbara, 9-2, yesterday to take 2 of 3 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Rainbows (9-3) took advantage of 10 walks allowed by five of the seven UCSB pitchers used in the game.

The Gauchos (2-3) scored on an error and an RBI double by Chris Fox in the second to take a 2-0 lead. But UH took the lead in the fifth when Kris Sanchez grounded to second for a double play with the bases loaded. He then extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a two-run home run in the ninth.

Schneider also was supported by three different double plays: the usual grounder, a fly out to left fielder Jorge Franco on a deep drive to left-center in which the runner at first was thrown out trying to advance to second, and on a liner to first baseman Sanchez, who tagged the runner at first for the unassisted DP.

"It was a pretty complete game," UH coach Mike Trapasso said. "I think we swung the bats pretty well. We were patient at the plate, were able to draw some walks today. I was real happy with our performance overall today."

Schneider (1-0) picked up his first decision in his longest outing of the season. The two runs he allowed were the first against him this season, but one was unearned. He walked one and struck out one.

"Early on he was struggling a little bit with command ... but he settled down and started throwing a good changeup with good arm speed," Trapasso said. "He was aggressive with it, started moving his fastball around, kind of settled into a rhythm and really pitched pretty well when you look at the game as a whole."

Tyler Davis finished with two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three.

The walks haunted the Gauchos. After striking out five of the first seven batters he faced, UCSB starter Mike Ford walked Landon Hernandez and Derek DuPree to start the third before Franco's bunt single to third loaded the bases. A wild pitch scored UH's first run and Hee followed with a sacrifice fly to left to tie the score at 2.

Hee led off the fifth with a walk from reliever Brian Tracy (0-1), son of Pittsburgh Pirates manager Jim Tracy, and eventually reached third after back-to-back singles by Justin Frash and Brandon Haislet, who returned to the lineup in center field after being DH Saturday. Hee scored when Sanchez grounded into a double play to make it 3-2.

Hee's two-run single highlighted a four-run sixth, with the other runs scoring on a passed ball and sacrifice fly to left by Haislet that made it 7-2.

Sanchez's two-run shot to left-center — his team-leading fourth homer of the season — came in the ninth off Justin Segal, UCSB's sixth reliever of the game.

"We will still look at Friday's game (a 3-1 loss) as a 'what if?' game because we just didn't play well," Trapasso said. "And yet, to win your first series on the road is a good thing. It's a good start. We just need to go from there."

Next up for the Rainbows is No. 11 Wichita State (1-2), which avoided getting swept with a 3-2 win yesterday at No. 23 Pepperdine. The Shockers will play doubleheaders tomorrow and Wednesday at UH-Hilo before arriving in Honolulu for their three-game series with the Rainbows starting Friday at Les Murakami Stadium.
