Conor Gillaspie hit a tie-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning as No. 12 Wichita State defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 7-2, yesterday to complete a sweep of a nonconference baseball doubleheader at Wong Stadium in Hilo.
Reliever Khol Nanney allowed one hit in four scoreless innings to earn the victory for the Shockers (5-2).
Peter Rodgers had two of the four hits the Vulcans (0-13) got off three pitchers.
In the opener, Damon Sublett had two hits and three RBIs, and Travis Banwart gave up four hits and two runs in five innings as Wichita State won, 9-2.
Rodgers had two hits, and A.J. Satele and Ronel Trias each hit RBI singles for Hilo.
SOFTBALL
UH SWEEPS LMU
The University of Hawai'i softball team relied on effective pitching and power hitting to sweep Loyola Marymount, 1-0 and 14-1, yesterday at Smith Field in Los Angeles.
In the seventh inning of the first game, Kate Robinson hit her fifth homer in six games to support Justine Smethurst's two-hitter. Smethurst (4-2) had six strikeouts.
In the second game, the Rainbow Wahine hammered six homers — two by Tanisha Milca.
Hawai'i (12-2) went 7-1 on this road trip.
TENNIS
CHANG, JOHNSON WIN
Seventh-seeded Stephany Chang upset top-seeded Logan Hansen, 6-2, 6-2, yesterday to win the girls singles title of the USTA Boys and Girls 18's National Open at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Second-seeded Steve Johnson defeated 10th-seeded Daniel Moss, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, in the boys final.
