The best moments at the Oscars? The unscripted ones. Here are some of the choicest quotes of the night, overheard at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, on Sunday.

  • Weather forecaster. Al Gore said it isn't just his winning doc "An Inconvenient Truth" that has raised awareness about global warming. "We have had a big ally: reality," he said backstage. "Mother Nature has spoken very loudly of late."

  • He goes she. "I love a fullfigured woman who can stand in front of a camera and sing her heart out. But that's enough about me." — John Travolta, making a not-so-veiled reference to his gender switcheroo in the upcoming musical "Hairspray" while presenting with full-figured co-star Queen Latifah.

  • What Tom whispered. Ex-Paramount chief Sherry Lansing, backstage with her Jean Hersholt Award for humanitarian work, said she had no idea Tom Cruise would be giving her the honorary Oscar. "I had seen him at an Oscar party a few days before, and he was sort of cold to me. I was a little hurt. But then he gave me the Oscar and he whispered, 'I couldn't tell you. It was a secret. This is an honor, and I really wanted to do this.' I really love him. I've known Tom since he was 19 years old. I almost started to cry."

  • Fashion statement. Legendary French actress Catherine Deneuve wore a bleeding heart on her chest, made for her by Jean Paul Gaultier. "I don't think he thought of it when he made it for me, but my heart bleeds for lots of people. The people of Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur and the death penalty."

  • Bird sense. George Miller, who won the animated feature Oscar, told reporters backstage that the average age of people working on "Happy Feet" was 26. "I'm an old fart (61 to be exact). I had a tsunami of learning to do when I first got started on animation."

  • Dream denied. Gasps were heard in the bar area when favorite Eddie Murphy of "Dreamgirls" lost to "Little Miss Sunshine's" Alan Arkin. But his onscreen love interest Anika Noni Rose said of the upset, "I can tell you Eddie did not even think he would be nominated, so I am sure he is just happy to be here."

  • What did he say? "Soundediting is very much like sex. It's usually done alone, late at night, surrounded by electronic gadgets." — presenter Steve Carell.

  • Chew this. Paramount chief Sumner Redstone on the studio's split with actor Tom Cruise: " 'Mission: Impossible' was a strong film. The problem was his unacceptable behavior. But I look forward to us having dinner someday."

  • Brand loyalty. Djimon Hounsou of "Blood Diamond" proudly declared on the carpet, "I have my Calvins on." The actor has a deal to do ads for the designer.

  • Size matters. Reminded that she is a record 14-time nominee, Meryl Streep revealed to Ryan Seacrest on E! during red-carpet arrivals, "And I'm a size 14, so it all matches."

  • In the mood. Emily Blunt of "The Devil Wears Prada" brought along her beau, singer Michael Buble, who apparently is quite the devil himself. When asked what the pair would be doing at midnight, he replied. "Hopefully making out."

  • When Cate met Kate. Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet ran into each other on the red carpet and admired the other's ensemble. Both exclaimed, "You look gorgeous!" Then, Blanchett grabbed Winslet's earrings and said, "They are lovely!"

  • An Al gal. Jodie Foster's reaction when she realized who was standing next to her on the red carpet: "Oh my God, it's Al Gore, it's Al Gore."

  • An ol' sew and sew? "I sewed up my sister's dress. That's how I spent my morning. It was too long, so I took it up for her." — Helen Mirren on being more downstairs than upstairs pre-Oscar.
