Travel to Islands up slightly in '06

A total of 8.45 million passengers traveled to Hawai'i last year, a 0.4 percent increase over 2005, according to state figures released yesterday.
Arrivals from the Mainland rose to 6.61 million in 2006, a 2.3 percent increase over 2005. International arrivals totaled 1.84 million last year, a 6.6 percent decline from the previous year.
The state has yet to provide a breakdown of how many of the December arrivals were visitors and how many were returning residents. That information will be included in a report expected to be released later this month.
Visitor arrivals for the first 11 months of last year were slightly below 2005's record pace. Through November, 6.75 million visitors traveled to Hawai'i, 0.1 percent below the same period a year earlier.
PAIK TO HEAD HR AT A&B
Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin Inc. named Son-Jai Paik vice president of human resources, responsible for all human resources functions at the company and its subsidiaries.
Paik's previous experience includes work for CIGNA Corp. and its Korean unit. His education includes master's degrees from Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration and School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
AGTOURISM MEET JAN. 12 ON BIG ISLE
The fifth Agtourism in Hawaii conference has been scheduled for Jan. 12 and will feature talks by Board of Agriculture chairwoman Sandra Kunimoto, British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture specialist Brent Warner and Holly George, author of "Agricultural and Rural Tourism in California."
The biennial conference starts at 8 a.m. at the Keauhou Beach Hotel. It is sponsored by the University of Hawai'i College of Tropical Agriculturewith support from Kamehameha Schools and government agencies.
