UH centennial celebration set
The University of Hawai'i-Manoa, the flagship campus of the UH system, will begin its 18-month Centennial Celebration with a kickoff party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 13.
The event and parking will be free to the public.
A campuswide open house will begin the celebration at 10 a.m. on the Hawai'i Hall lawn and will continue with activities for all ages at various campus locations until 2 p.m.

RECYCLING DRIVE AIDS MCKINLEY
The 23rd Aloha 'Aina Earth Day recycling collection will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the McKinley High School parking lot, with proceeds benefiting the school.
Scrap metal, auto parts, tires, newspapers, cardboard, cans, bottles or any other recyclables will be collected by local businesses, which will then make a donation to the school.
Over the previous 22 Aloha 'Aina projects, more than 21 containers of green waste, tires, newspapers and beverage containers have been collected.

YOUTH-MENTOR PROGRAM JAN. 13
The first Hawai'i Mentoring Conference, presented by Kamehameha Schools' Mentoring Branch, Big Brother Big Sisters of Hawai'i and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, will be held Jan. 13 at the Hawai'i Convention Center.
The conference will focus on youth-mentoring programs in Hawai'i and their effective recruitment and training strategies.
It will also be an opportunity to meet those who are developing mentoring programs statewide.
Mentoring expert Dr. Susan Weinberger, author of "Mentoring a Movement: My Personal Journey," will be the keynote speaker at the conference.
