Festivities usher in Year of the Boar

Advertiser Staff

A variety of Chinese organizations and Downtown folks will help the city make February a month-long celebration of Chinese New Year.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann yesterday joined leaders of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Chinatown Merchants Association, United Chinese Coalition, United Chinese Society and The ARTS at Marks Garage to announce public-private partnerships that helped make possible a month of festivities marking the arrival of the Year of the Boar.

The free public events will run from the first weekend in February through the final weekend, Feb. 23 and 24, when the city will co-sponsor an outdoor movie weekend at A'ala Park modeled on the popular Sunset on the Beach and community events.

Hannemann said the various organizations pooled resources last year in a coordinated marketing effort and were able to take on an even more ambitious schedule this year.

Sponsors have produced Year of the Boar buttons (similar to the Aloha Festivals design), and various restaurants and businesses will offer February discounts for those with the buttons and/or event booklets.

A 32-page glossy booklet with a guide to events will be available at The ARTS at Marks Garage and other venues in Chinatown.

Both the Year of the Boar booklets and buttons for the monthlong Chinese New Year festivities Downtown are available for free.
