Hear Sister Helen Prejean speak

Sister Helen Prejean, whose story was told in the Oscar-winning movie "Dead Man Walking," will speak at 4 p.m. March 11 as part of the Mackey Lecture series.

Prejean's two books have been in the forefront of the campaign against the death penalty. The free lecture will be at the Mystical Rose Oratory chapel on the Saint Louis School/Chaminade University campus.

JAZZ MAN PLAYS, 'JAZZMAN' SCREENS

After a free 6:30 p.m. screening of "Jazzman from the Gulag," Tennyson Stephens will perform tomorrow at Temple Emanu-El.

The film documents the life of Eddie Rosner, a son of Jewish-Polish immigrants and considered by some to be one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

The film runs in advance of the Fifth Annual Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival, Feb. 15 to 19 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Spalding Auditorium. Festival programs and flash passes will be available at the temple tomorrow.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES MARKS 60TH YEAR

Catholic Charities Hawaii celebrates its 60th anniversary at its 2007 annual meeting, 11:30 a.m. Feb. 9. The luncheon, which includes installation of new officers and will recognize exemplary community partners and volunteers, will be held in the Hale Koa Hotel's DeRussy Hall.

ANITA HALL TO SING AT CENTRAL UNION

Anita Hall will present "A Gift of Music" at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow during Central Union Church's contemporary service in the Parish Hall. The church is at Beretania and Punahou streets.

Known for jazz standards, the Island recording artist also sings gospel classics and Broadway favorites.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY HONORS

A free annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and Peacemaker Awards ceremony will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.

This year's honoree is Elizabeth R. Kent, director of the state Judiciary's Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution, who has developed and implemented mediation programs. Leslie "Buz" Tennent, a Chaminade University music professor, will perform.
