Public comment sought on state court candidates

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has asked for public comment on candidates for two vacancies in the state court system: chief judge of the Intermediate Court of Appeals and Circuit Court judge in the First Circuit on O'ahu.

The Judicial Selection Commission gave Lingle six candidates for each position, and the governor has 30 days to make her selections and give the nominations to the state Senate, which will hold confirmation hearings.

The candidates for the chief judge of the Intermediate Court of Appeals are Daniel Foley, an associate judge on the Intermediate Court of Appeals; Katherine Leonard, an attorney with Carlsmith Ball LLP; Sabrina McKenna, a judge in the Circuit Court of the First Circuit; Mark Recktenwald, director of the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and a former assistant U.S. attorney; Michael Tanigawa, director with Char Sakamoto Ishii Lum & Ching; and Frances Wong, a judge in the Circuit Court of the First Circuit.

James Burns currently holds that position. He will retire this year.

The candidates for judge in the Circuit Court of the First Circuit on O'ahu are Cecelia Chang, a special assistant U.S. attorney; Sherri-Ann Iha, a deputy prosecuting attorney; Glenn Kim, a deputy prosecuting attorney; Peter Stone, an attorney; Lori Wada, a deputy prosecuting attorney; and Allen Wolff, a partner at Carlsmith Ball.

Lingle has asked that any public comments be submitted by Feb. 2 through e-mail to Governor.Lingle@hawaii.gov or by fax at 586-0006.
