Police yesterday captured a 42-year-old fugitive wanted on a no-bail probation retake warrant, but not before the man allegedly drove his car at eight police officers and damaged three HPD vehicles.

Kapolei Crime Reduction Unit officers arrested Leonard Kealoha for investigation of eight counts of attempted murder and three counts of first-degree criminal property damage.

It was the third time this month that a suspect fleeing arrest allegedly drove a vehicle at a Honolulu police officer.

Kealoha allegedly drove his car at officers in an attempt to escape from the parking lot of Lualualei Beach Park No. 2 in Wai'anae about 11 a.m., running over the foot of an officer in the process, said Kapolei Crime Reduction Unit supervisor Sgt. Edgar Namoca. The injury was minor, according to Namoca.

"He was kind of wild and kept saying he wasn't going back (to prison)," Namoca said.

Police officers tracked Kealoha to Ma'ili'ili Road with assistance from HPD's helicopter and found his car abandoned. Kealoha was found hiding in bushes nearby and arrested.

Kealoha's eight convictions dating back to 1984 include first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, and two auto thefts.

Meanwhile, charges were pending against multiple auto-theft suspect Christian Kainoa "Kai" Kudlich, 20, who was arrested at a Kuhio Avenue hotel Sunday by officers, include first-degree assault for allegedly injuring a police officer in fleeing from arrest Jan. 10.

Kudlich allegedly struck two parked cars and a police vehicle in driving off in a stolen car.

A police officer avoided injury on Wednesday when an auto theft suspect tried to run him down in fleeing from arrest after a stop in Kahalu'u.
