Every winning production needs a supporting cast and Kalaheo's Cheynne Lishman played that role perfectly against the visiting Moanalua boys basketball team last night.
The junior guard scored seven of his 10 points in the second half as the Mustangs beat Na Menehune, 57-39, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association showdown.
Kalaheo's 6-foot-6 center Tyler Caswell drew much attention from Moanalua and that left Lishman open for a crucial fourth-quarter putback. Caswell finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds as the Mustangs avenged a season-opening loss to Na Menehune.
"Having Tyler in the post, it made a lot of the Moanalua guys think, 'We have to block this guy out,' and that left me alone," Lishman said. "I had to take advantage of that."
Kalaheo, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 8-1 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. Moanalua, ranked No. 6, fell to 5-3.
Lishman hit two 3-pointers in the game and made his key putback in the fourth quarter after Stevie Austin's layup cut Moanalua's deficit to 42-37 with 5:29 left.
On the ensuing possession, Kalaheo's Cliffton Pires was fouled and he made the front end of a one-and-one, but missed the second. The 6-foot-1 Lishman tipped the ball in the hoop to give Kalaheo a 45-37 lead.
"It worked out good," said Lishman, whose basket sparked a 14-2 run to end the game.
"Kalaheo is obviously the best team," Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said. "We're not considering ourselves one of the top teams. We just want to be around at the end."
Na Menehune trailed 23-16 at intermission but cut the lead to 23-21 after Jay Yoshizawa's 3-pointer and Austin's layup early in the third quarter.
The Mustangs responded with a 16-8 run to push their lead to 39-29. Cody vonAppen hit two 3s while Lishman and Chase Moses each had one 3 in the key surge.
