THE VERDICT: FIVE

THE RATINGS

5 — Outstanding: Add it to your collection now. A must-have.

4 — Great: Buy it or rent it — definitely play it.

3 — Good: Worth playing despite some flaws.

2 — Fair: Unless you're a fan of the license or series, don't bother.

1 — Poor: You'd have more fun playing "Pong."

Game: "Tekken: Dark Resurrection"

Console: Sony PSP

Developer/publisher: Namco Games

Number of players: One to two

Rating: T for teen — crude humor, mild language, suggestive themes, violence

Premise: "Tekken: Dark Resurrection" is the portable version of the arcade game of the same name with three extra characters and better graphics. It's the story of the Mishima Corporation's annual fighting event, called the King of Iron Fist Tournament. But Mishima's head Heihachi Mishima has been murdered, so who is putting on this year's tournament — and who murdered Heihachi?

Game play: "Dark Resurrection" uses the same fighting system found in "Tekken 5," but there are minor tweaks and some moves use different commands. The PSP control scheme also is different.

If you've played "Tekken Tag," you're familiar with "Tekken Bowling," one of this game's unlockable features (and one of the rankings).

There is an updated customization screen from "Tekken 5" with more options. You can also participate in ranking tournaments to earn extra money for customization and buying endings. You can challenge your friends but, unfortunately, not other players online.

Good/bad: This is a perfect hand-held translation of a great fighting series. However, there is no online fighting component, which would have made this hand-held title stand out.

There is much additional content — Arcade, Story, Tekken Dojo and Bowling — to have you playing for hours. Ending boss Jin Pachi is still not a playable character.

Tips: Participate in "online" ranking tournaments to gain additional money for extras.

If you're having a tough time, don't hesitate to lower the difficulty level or do practice mode.

Beat the game instead of buying endings to save money.

Lose and don't continue during the match with Jin Pachi to get his secret ending.

My take: I highly recommend picking up this game; it's worth getting for any "Tekken" or fighting-game fan. But this is not "Tekken 6" — "Dark Resurrection" is "Tekken 5" with some extras. So why spend money on a game you already played? You can play ranking tournaments, get ghosts and wallpaper with the online feature, and challenge anyone outside the house with the wireless play. I'm glad to see Namco/Bandai fixed the data-save problem that plagued my friend's copy of "Tekken 5." What takes away from this game is the inability to play people online.
