Copters, bulldozers still fighting Maui fire

Advertiser Staff

Crews continued to battle the fire Sunday at Maui's Kula Forest Reserve in upper Kula. Firefighters used bulldozers and helicopters to build buffer zones between the fire and neighboring communities.

Maui County officials reported little threat to homes or structures.

A public meeting was scheduled Sunday night at the Kula Community Center from 7 to 9 p.m. with representatives from the Department of Land and Natural Resources Forestry Division to provide information and answer questions.

The firefighting efforts have been hampered by the difficult terrain, dense forest and changing wind conditions. Officials said Sunday they would continue helicopter water drops, installing firebreaks by bulldozer and ground-crew efforts to fight and contain the fire.

The Waipoli access road into Polipoli Park was closed.

The fire has burned at least 600 acres.
