The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning Sunday for the north and west shores of Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, O'ahu and Moloka'i and for the north shores of Maui.

A high-surf advisory was in effect for west shores of the Big Island.

A storm northwest of the Islands has produced a large swell that will affect north and west shores of the main Hawaiian islands over the next few days.

Waves were expected to reach 14 to 18 feet on north shores Sunday night and 20 to 25 feet Monday. For west shores on islands under the warning, waves of 9 to 14 feet were expected Sunday night, reaching 15 to 20 feet on Monday.

On the Big Island, which was under an advisory, not a warning, waves of 6 to 8 feet were expected Monday, the weather service said.

The largest swells Monday night and Tuesday might be large enough to close roads or produce property damage.

The warning and advisory are in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
