Mililani, Sacred Hearts top softball seeds

Mililani and Sacred Hearts were awarded the top seeds Sunday for the DataHouse/ HHSAA Division I and II state softball championship tournaments, respectively.
The tournaments begin Wednesday.
All Division I games will be at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Division II tournament is at Central O'ahu Regional Park, except for the semifinal, third place and championship games, which will be played at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Division I semifinals will be broadcast on Oceanic Cable 16 and KHNR FM 97.5 on Friday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. OC-16 and KHNR also will broadcast Saturday's Division II championship at 6 p.m. and the Division I championship game at 8 p.m.
TENNIS
CZINK, RUSSELL WIN WAIKOLOA CHALLENGER
Second-seeded Melinda Czink of Hungary defeated top seed Edina Gallovits of Romania, 6-2, 6-3, to win the women's title of the USTA Waikoloa Challenger at the Waikoloa Village Tennis Club on the Big Island.
Fifth-seeded Michael Russell of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., defeated unseeded Jamie Baker, 6-1, 7-5, to win the men's championship.
In the all-United States men's doubles championship, unseeded Brendan Evans and Scott Oudesma defeated third-seeded Scott Lipsky and David Martin, 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 (tiebreaker).
SURFING
BARTELS FINISHES SECOND IN AUSTRALIA MEET
Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels placed second in the Roxy Pro Women's Surf Festival on Sunday at Phillip Island, Australia.
Australia's Stephanie Gilmore defeated Bartels in the one-on-one final, 18.17 to 8.76.
"The waves were good, but I just couldn't put it together against Steph," Bartels said. "But this is a good start for me and a definite confidence booster to the start of the year."
The contest was the first World Qualifying Series contest of 2007.
In the junior pro division for females age 21 and younger, shark-attack survivor Bethany Hamilton of Kaua'i tied for fifth place.
RUNNING
4,166 SIGN UP EARLY FOR HONOLULU MARATHON
A total of 4,166 signed up for the Honolulu Marathon during a nine-day early registration at Niketown in Waikiki, which ended Sunday.
A discounted $20 fee was offered for Hawai'i residents and military for the marathon on Dec. 9.
This year's total was 1,100 more than last year and 266 more than the previous high in 1994.
Last year, 28,635 entered the Honolulu Marathon including 6,750 from Hawai'i.
WATER POLO
RAINBOW WAHINE NO. 5 IN PRESEASON POLL
The University of Hawai'i women are ranked fifth in the preseason Collegiate Women's Varsity Water Polo poll.
Southern California is ranked No. 1, followed by UCLA, Stanford and California.
UH was 18-12 last season and finished fourth in the NCAA tournament.
The Rainbows open their season Feb. 1 at San Jose State.
