PUNALU'U
Necropsy done on dolphin
Advertiser Staff
Scientists are waiting for the results of a necropsy performed on a spinner dolphin discovered in Punalu'u on Saturday afternoon near Kahana Bay.
Dr. Kristi West, assistant professor of biology at Hawai'i Pacific University, who worked on the deceased dolphin with six HPU students on Sunday, said the animal died not long before it was discovered and that its organs and body condition were quite normal, leaving the cause of death a mystery.
West said samples were taken from all the dolphin's organs and that she would have a better idea of how the animal died in about a month.
Two dolphins were stranded in Hawai'i in April — on Maui and Lana'i.
