Rainbows win title

ASICS Rainbows, Aloha Region, defeated Long Beach 14 Elite, 25-8, 21-25, 15-9, in the title match last night in the Girls' 14 National Tournament Gold Division at the USA Volleyball Girls' Junior Olympic Championship at Minneapolis.

The Rainbows finished 9-2 in the tournament.

Team members were Katherine Brooks, Ayesha Hein, Talia Jardin, Taylor Ka'alele, Kayla Kawamura, Shannan McCready, Tasha Meyer, Kainoa Ocasek, Sarah Palmer, Kaeli Patton, Brigitte Russo and Capri Tirrell.

They were coached by Luis Ramirez and Natalie Oana-Russo.


SOFTBALL

UH COACHES HONORED

University of Hawai'i head softball coach Bob Coolen, along with assistants John Nakamura and Dee Wisneski, were named West Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine (50-13) won the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional, where it fell to eventual NCAA runner-up Tennessee. Hawai'i finished the year ranked No. 12 in the NFCA/USA Today poll.

The Rainbow Wahine coaching staff will be honored at the NFCA National Convention in November in Las Vegas.

The Arizona coaching staff was named Pacific Region and Division I Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to their second straight national title.


BASEBALL

MILILANI TRIUMPHS

Mililani defeated Hawai'i Kai, 11-2, Sunday to capture the PONY Pony (age 13) state baseball tournament.

Mililani advances to the West Zone Tournament, July 21 to 25, at Fullerton, Calif.

In other PONY state tournaments, Windward beat Maui, 7-2, in the Mustang (ages 9-10) final to earn a berth in the West Zone Tournament, July 26 to 30, at Chino Hills, Calif.; and 'Ewa/'Ewa Beach defeated KAC, 4-1, to win the Pinto (ages 7-8) championship. There is no West Zone Tournament for the Pinto division.


BASKETBALL

SHOCK WAIVE SANDERS

The Detroit Shock of the WNBA waived former University of Hawai'i player Amy Sanders yesterday.

Sanders, a rookie guard who joined the team in training camp, averaged 1.5 minutes in six games. She had two points — hitting one free throw in two games — two rebounds and two turnovers.
