Hawaii hit-and-run suspect may have been impaired

By Rod Ohira

Police suspect a Wai'anae man arrested for questioning in Saturday's fatal hit-and-run accident on Farrington Highway in Makaha was driving under the influence.

Victor Lawrence Goodson, 22, was arrested at his home at 6:40 a.m. Saturday, about an hour and 15 minutes after a 39-year-old female bicyclist was struck by a driver in a 2006 Honda Pilot, who fled afterward.

The bicyclist, identified by the medical examiner's office as Correena Medeiros, was pronounced dead at the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

Goodson was booked at the Kapolei police station on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide, failure to render aid and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

He was transferred to the main police station cellblock at about 8 a.m. and released at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, pending further investigation.

Medeiros' death was O'ahu's 39th traffic fatality of the year and third since Thursday.

There were 51 deaths by this day in 2006.
