An 84-year-old Hamakua man, who died Saturday after a two-car crash on Hawai'i Belt Road, has been identified as William L. Ferreira.
The crash happened about 8:30 a.m. when Ferreira, who was driving a 1996 Honda sedan, attempted to make a U-turn and was hit by a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck.
Ferreira was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m. at the North Hawai'i Community Hospital. The driver of the pickup truck, a 44-year-old Kamuela man, was not injured. Both drivers had been wearing seat belts.
Police said they do not believe speed or alcohol were involved. It was the 17th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 18 by this time in 2006.
