Hawaii women advance in world surf
Advertiser Staff
Hawai'i surfers Crystal Dzigas, Joy Magelssen and Kelia Moniz won their first-round heats at the Roxy Women's World Longboard Championship yesterday.
The opening day of the contest was completed in cold 2-foot waves at Biarritz, France.
Dzigas and Magelssen were two of the standouts of the first round. They each received a two-wave total score of 13.75 — tied for third-best score of the day among all surfers.
Moniz won with a two-wave score of 10.9. At 14, Moniz is the youngest competitor in the event.
As first-round winners, Dzigas, Magelssen and Moniz advanced directly to the third round.
Janna Irons from Kaua'i and Miku Uemura from Wai'anae did not win their first-round heats, and will have to compete in the second round, where eliminations begin.
The winner of the contest will be crowned the 2007 world champion of women's longboarding. Defending champion Schuyler McFerran of California won her first-round heat, and had the highest score of the day at 15.5.
IRONS WINS FIRST HEAT
Kaua'i's Andy Irons won his first-round heat at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay men's contest yesterday.
Nine heats of the first round were completed in 3- to 5-foot waves at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, before the remainder of the round was postponed due to deteriorating conditions.
Irons, a three-time former world champion, started this year ranked No. 33, but has since moved up to No. 3.
"I want to hush the critics and all the people who are saying, 'He's over it' and that I'm not hungry," Irons said. "I'm as hungry as ever and I want to do well in every contest. Just because I started with a bad result doesn't mean it will haunt me for the rest of the year."
As a first-round winner, Irons advanced directly to the third round.
Fellow Hawai'i surfers Fred Patacchia Jr. and Pancho Sullivan did not win their heats, and will have to compete in the second round, where eliminations begin.
Bruce Irons, Andy's younger brother, has yet to complete his first-round heat.
The contest is the fifth of 10 events on the 2007 World Championship Tour.
