Bob Hogue, a veteran broadcaster and former Hawai'i state senator, has been named commissioner of the Pacific West Conference, it was announced yesterday.

"I'm so honored to have this opportunity," Hogue said. "The PacWest is an exciting conference with great coaches and tremendous athletes at seven fantastic institutions of higher learning."

Hogue has spent more than 30 years in radio and television broadcasting, and also has print media experience, mainly focused on collegiate athletics.

Hogue succeeds Woody Hahn, who has been commissioner of the PacWest since its inception in 1992.

"I am confident that Bob Hogue will build on the foundation that Woody created, and provide new, fresh leadership and direction that will be positive and productive for the member institutions and ensure the academic and athletic success of the thousands of student-athletes who compete for them," said HPU president Chatt G. Wright, who serves as president of the PacWest.

The Pacific West Conference is composed of Hawai'i Pacific, Hawai'i-Hilo, Chaminade, Brigham Young-Hawai'i, Grand Canyon (Phoenix, Ariz.), Notre Dame de Namur (Belmont, Calif.) and Dixie State College (St. George, Utah).

FOOTBALL

TI-CATS CALL ON CHANG

Former University of Hawai'i quarterback Tim Chang came off the bench for the third straight game and nearly rallied the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a Canadian Football League victory last night.

Chang completed 4 of 11 passes for 92 yards and one touchdown, but visiting Montreal held on for a 29-20 victory.

Hamilton trailed 26-10 when Tiger-Cats coach Charlie Taaffe benched starter Jason Maas.

Chang threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Brock Ralph early in the fourth quarter, then drove the Tiger-Cats to Nick Setta's 27-yard field goal with a little more than five minutes to play.

After forcing a punt, Hamilton took over at its 28 with 1:33 remaining. Chang completed a pass for no gain, then threw two incompletions as the Tiger-Cats (0-3) ceded possession. Damon Duval's 26-yard field goal with 49 seconds left clinched it for the Alouettes (1-2).

BASKETBALL

LOJESKI SCORES SEVEN

Former University of Hawai'i guard Matt Lojeski scored seven points in Utah's 100-85 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers last night in a Rocky Mountain Revue summer league game at Salt Lake City.

Lojeski, who is trying to make the Jazz roster as a free agent, shot 3 of 8 from the field, including 1 of 3 from 3-point range. He added one rebound in 12 minutes, 43 seconds of play.

Elsewhere, ex-Rainbow guard Carl English did not play in Houston's 90-72 victory over Sacramento in an NBA Summer League game at Las Vegas.

WHITING TO GERMANY

Zack Whiting, a Division II All-American who played at Chaminade, has signed with a German professional team, according to a release by the school.

Whiting, a three-time Pacific West Conference first-team selection, will play for the Bayer Giants Leverkusen.
