Charging admission for soccer, softball considered

The University of Hawai'i said it is looking at the possibility of charging admission for both soccer and softball for the coming seasons.
UH hasn't charged admission to softball for five years and has sold tickets to soccer only once previously, the spring game against Virginia, officials said.
"We're looking at new ways to attract revenue," athletic director Herman Frazier said yesterday.
For softball, Frazier said UH would likely look at charging admission for single games and doubleheaders, but not tournaments.
UH stopped charging admission for softball upon Frazier's arrival in 2002 when he said it became more expensive to sell tickets than to let fans in for free. "We were charging for softball — and losing 20 grand," Frazier said.
But coming off the Rainbow Wahine's first trip to an NCAA Super regional, a 50-13 finish and most of the team expected to return, UH is considering charging admission to selected games but probably not some tournament games.
"I would welcome a move toward making them revenue-generating sports, even if it is just a little bit (of revenue)," said Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano, UH associate athletic director and senior women's administrator.
