The Lanikai Canoe Club capped its perfect season in the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association with a score of 100 yesterday to win the OHCRA Championship Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
Lanikai won all seven regattas it entered this season, and yesterday was its second consecutive OHCRA title.
"It's pretty miraculous if you think about it," Lanikai head coach Dave Smith said. "There are so many good clubs here in OHCRA, and for us to finish it this way ... I couldn't have called it."
Lanikai won seven of the 39 races in the regatta, and placed second in 15 other races. Only the top four canoes in each race scored points on a 5-3-2-1 basis.
"For the most part, we put in our best crews today," Smith said. "We ramp up for states starting with this one."
The Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship Regatta is scheduled for Aug. 4 at Hanalei Bay, Kaua'i. Hawaiian Canoe Club from Maui is the six-time defending state champion, and based on yesterday's results, Lanikai will be the top challenger.
"Hats off to Lanikai," Kailua head coach Kawai Mahoe said. "They proved they were the dominating force in OHCRA this year. It seemed like even when they put in their second crews they were winning the regattas."
Kailua placed second yesterday with 78 points. It was the sixth time in seven regattas that Kailua placed second to Lanikai.
Outrigger was third with 63 points, and Hui Nalu was fourth with 47.
Lanikai got a strong performance from its youth paddlers, led by the boys 12 crew, which went undefeated this season.
"Those boys have been good for us all year," Smith said. "It's quite an accomplishment to win every race."
Lanikai's novice crews were also good, winning the women novice B, men novice B and men novice A races. They also placed second in mixed novice B and women novice A. All told, Lanikai scored 21 out of a possible 25 points in the novice races.
"The novices were awesome for us," Smith said. "Not just today, all year. Men and women. They were a big boost for the club."
Lanikai's men novice B crew went undefeated this season.
Lanikai also got an exciting win late in the day from its men 40-older crew. They passed Outrigger in the final 20 yards of the 1-mile race and won it by 0.33 of a second.
"I looked across (at Outrigger) and told our guys it's now or never," said Scott Freitas, who steered the Lanikai crew. "We just leaned forward and armed it for the last 60 strokes."
Kailua won seven races yesterday, and its girls 12 and women 50 crews went undefeated for the season.
Mahoe said Kailua will enter the division for large clubs at the state regatta, but he does not expect to contend for first place.
"If we couldn't beat Lanikai here, I really doubt that we can beat them at states," he said. "It'll probably come down to Lanikai and Hawaiian. They're both super-strong."
Outrigger won a regatta-high 10 races, but could not match Lanikai's overall strength.
"Obviously, we won't be in the running with the big clubs at states," Outrigger head coach Kehau Kali said. "But we have quality, and at least we have a lot of crews that have a chance to win."
Hui Lanakila scored 50 points and won the AA division for medium-sized clubs.
Hui Lanakila won six races, including a sweep of the prestigious senior races for both men and women. The senior races are the top races of the regatta.
The men's senior crew of Mike Hangai, Manny Kulukulualani, Kelly Foster, Hayden Ramler, Raven Aipa and Adam Treinen-Aea completed the 1 1/2-mile course in 10 minutes, 56.91 seconds to edge Lanikai by 1.2 seconds.
"We came out a little ahead (after the last turn) and then just kept going strong upwind," Foster said. "And we just got lucky at the end and pulled it off."
Despite placing second yesterday, Lanikai earned OHCRA's top seed for the men's senior race at the state championship regatta.
The Hui Lanakila women's senior crew of Jessie Eames, Sarah Van De Vanter, Mikala Bradley, Arlene Holzman, Robyn Singh and Katie Slocumb completed their 1 1/2-mile race in 12:58.49 to beat Lanikai by 34 seconds.
Hui Lanakila went undefeated in both the women's junior and senior races this season.
They also could have gone undefeated in the sophomore race, but did not enter it yesterday because they had already clinched the top seed for that race in the state regatta.
Kai Oni won the A division for small clubs with 17 points. It won the mixed 12 and mixed novice B races.
Just three years ago, Kai Oni did not have enough paddlers to enter the OHCRA Championship Regatta.
"A lot of hard work went into this," Kai Oni head coach Duane Samson said. "I'm overwhelmed, actually. For us to get 17 points going up against all the big clubs is a great achievement for our club."
The top five crews in each race division will represent OHCRA at the state regatta.
Yesterday's regatta was dedicated to Michael Tongg, a former paddler and race official with OHCRA. He died on July 13 after a four-year battle with lung cancer.
All of the OHCRA clubs participated in a ceremony honoring Tongg prior to yesterday's races.
