WAIMEA
Tour Hawaii's 'musical' plants
Advertiser Staff
Ancient Hawaiians used plants to make musical instruments, and families can learn more about that from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Waimea Valley Audubon Center.
Auntie Kanani, the valley's kupuna, will lead a tour of the ethnobotanical collection to familiarize children and adults with plants that were turned into musical instruments, including bamboo, coconut, gourds and a variety of wood.
During Ke Kani O Na Mea Ulu or The Sound of Growing Things, people will collect material and make an instrument to take home.
The program fee is $3 plus admission. Call 638-9199 for more information.
