The underdog will still have his day.
Kala Kolohe Hose will just have to wait another three months for it.
The Icon Sport mixed martial arts organization announced yesterday that its "Fearless" card scheduled for June 30 at the Blaisdell Center Arena has been postponed because of an injury to world champion Robbie Lawler.
Hose and Lawler were scheduled to meet for the middleweight (185 pounds) championship in the main event of the card.
The card has been rescheduled for Sept. 15 at the Blaisdell Arena.
"I was training seven days a week, twice a day," Hose said. "I was putting all my time into this fight, so it's kind of hard to push it back now. But injuries happen in this sport. I just have to start over again and be ready for September."
Lawler was recently diagnosed with a separated shoulder during a training incident.
Lawler, who defeated Frank Trigg for the title in April, normally trains in Iowa.
"I want him to come back healthy," Hose said. "I wouldn't want to fight him injured anyway. I want him at the top of his game."
Lawler is 14-4 and ranked No. 8 in the world in the middleweight division by mma weekly.com.
Hose, a former running back at Wai'anae High, is 6-1. He is being hyped by event promoters as the "underdog Hawaiian."
Hose said he will not accept any other bouts before the Sept. 15 fight against Lawler.
"I'm going to take maybe one week off and relax," Hose said. "But then I'm going to start going hard again right after that. My focus is going to be on Lawler the whole time. It's about 13 weeks away — that's not too long."
In the meantime, Oregon's Chris Leben offered Hose a chance to train at the Icon Martial Arts and Fitness Center. Leben, a veteran of Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts, is the head trainer at the new gym in Niu Valley.
"We'll try to work something out," Hose said. "I think it would be worth it. Everybody can teach you something."
Hose lives in Wai'anae, but said he trains at various gyms around O'ahu.
"I've been cross-training for this fight," he said. "I do different things at different gyms, so that's why I'm driving all over the place."
Tickets already purchased for the June 30 card can still be used for the Sept. 15 event.
Customers seeking refunds must do so at the same outlet where the tickets were purchased. Online sales will be refunded at www.ticketmaster.com. The Blaisdell box office should be ready to process refunds starting Friday.
Other Hawai'i fighters scheduled to appear on the Sept. 15 card include Renato "Charuto" Verissimo, Tyson Nam, Bronson Pieper, Mark Oshiro and Po'ai Suganuma.
