Documentaries, personality profiles and the acclaimed "The Land Has Eyes" are part of the University of Hawai'i's Cinema Series' Hawaii Filmmakers Summer Showcase, launching Sunday.

The films screen at 5 p.m. Sundays � except for Aug. 12, summer graduation day � through Aug. 26 at UH-Manoa's Spalding Auditorium. Admission is $5 general, $3 for UH students, faculty and staff. Information: 223-0130.

The schedule:

  • "Pule Wailele" (directed by Jon C. Kalani Zak; Hawai'i, 2007, 57 minutes)

    Documentary focuses on the lush, natural beauty of the Islands, and the Native Hawaiians who have reconnected with their culture and the land. A Honolulu premiere. With filmmaker Zak.

    Playing with:

  • "Islands at Risk: Genetic Engineering in Hawaii" (directed by Joan Lander and Puhipau; Hawai'i, 2007, 24 minutes)

    Produced for Earthjustice, this film considers local experimentation with genetic engineering of crops.

  • "Sacred Tibet: The Path to Mount Kailash" (directed by Thomas Vendetti; Hawai'i, 2006, 90 minutes)

    Kris Kristofferson narrates and the late Gardner McKay co-wrote this story of the pilgrimage into Tibet by flutist Paul Horn and Maui's Lama Tenzin.

  • "30 Years of Laughter: Frank DeLima" (directed by Kenneth Martinez Burgmaier; Hawai'i, 2006, 52 minutes)

    A profile of favorite Island comic Frank DeLima.

    Focusing on the veteran songwriter, screen actor and musician Kristofferson.

  • "Qigong: Ancient Chinese Healing for the 21st Century" (directed by Francesco Garripoli; Hawai'i, 1999, 85 minutes)

    A look at the practice of qigong, featuring Master Duan Zhiliang and Master Sha.

  • "Strange Land: My Mother's War Bride Story" (directed by Stephanie Castillo; Hawai'i, 2006, 53 minutes)

    This documentary focuses on challenges faced by the filmmaker's mother, who came to America from the Philippines at the end of World War II.

  • "Remember the Boys" (directed by Stephanie Castillo; USA, 2005, 30 minutes)

    A tribute to Domingo Los Banos, an army chaplain who has devoted most of his life to caring for his fellow World War II veterans.

  • "The Hawaiians � Reflecting Spirit" (directed by Edgy Lee; Hawai'i, 2005, 52 minutes)

    A look at the Hawaiian people, their origins, culture and challenges, and featuring U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, musician Keali'i Reichel, Hokule'a navigator and Kamehameha Schools trustee Nainoa Thompson and others. With filmmaker Lee.

  • "Wahine o Ke Kai" (directed by Vince Keala Lucero; Hawai'i, 2005, 26 minutes)

    Following the journey of Donna Kahiwa Kahakui, who in 2004 paddled 200 miles from O'ahu to Kaua'i to Lehua to Ni'ihau to raise awareness about the ocean. With filmmakers Lucero and Christina Simpkins.

  • "Made of Music: The Story of John Cruz" (directed by Leslie Truglio; O'ahu, 2006, 70 minutes)

    A profile of musician John Cruz, from his early days in Palolo Valley to his ups (hit "Acoustic Soul" album) and downs (drug addiction).

  • "The Nation Within" (directed by Tom Coffman; 2006 revised cut, 90 minutes)

    An expanded version of the documentary about the events leading to the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, and based on the book by Coffman.

  • "The Land Has Eyes" (directed by Vilsoni Hereniko; Hawai'i/Fiji, 2004, 87 minutes)

    Viki, a young South Pacific Islander whose family is wrongly shamed, finds redemption and inspiration in the mythical warrior woman.
