Kailua senior Kili Vierra was a pitcher who could beat you with his arm, bat and defense this season, and that combination earned him O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division Player of the Year honors after a vote of league coaches.
Vierra, a 5-foot-8 right-hander, did not put up big strikeout totals but found many ways to win.
He went 3-1, including a three-hit shutout of Kalaheo and a five-hit shutout of Kalani. Vierra also helped the Surfriders beat Moanalua when he slammed a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.
In four other games, he either had multiple hits or drove in a run, and he played second base when not pitching to help Kailua (9-1) win the East title.
Vierra and fellow Surfrider Kale Sumner (third base) join 10 others selected to a very well-balanced OIA East all-star first team.
Castle, Kaiser, Kalani and Roosevelt also were represented by two players. Castle placed catcher Lyle Kitagawa and utility player Pulama Silva; Kaiser was represented by outfielder Dustin Dela Pena and pitcher Toby Inouye; Kalani placed outfielder Ridge Carpenter and designated hitter Chris Pieper, and Roosevelt was represented by second baseman Keoni Manago and shortstop Nick Wong.
McKinley first baseman Roger Kramer and Moanalua outfielder Jordan Monico round out the first team.
Kailua's Corey Ishigo was named Coach of the Year.
