Maui Community College student Jessica "Mira" Allen is one of five national winners of the 2007 Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award from Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,000 college and university presidents.

Recipients receive a $1,500 prize in recognition of innovative approaches to addressing community issues. Allen is studying journalism at MCC and is news editor of the campus newspaper, Ho'oulu, and an officer with the local Phi Theta Kappa chapter, an international honor society for two-year colleges.

Her service projects include organizing financial aid workshops for students.
