Some 90 students from Mililani Middle School took a break from an excursion to deliver food to homeless people at Mokule'ia Beach Park.
The seventh-graders collected and distributed about 200 pounds of staples and school supplies last week to 10 families living in tents and out of automobiles in the area, said Ron Valenciana, pastor of the Once A Month Church.
The students were going to the beach park for a restroom stop before hiking to Ka'ena Point and their teacher thought it would be a good opportunity, Valenciana said. "It was a neat way to teach the kids that the whole world doesn't revolve in their bubble," he said.
