Former University of Hawai'i women's basketball player Janevia Taylor remained hospitalized in intensive care last night in California with serious injuries following an automobile accident Saturday afternoon, according to UH coach Jim Bolla.

Bolla said Taylor has "head trauma and some internal injuries," and was in a medically induced coma at the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia, Calif.

Taylor, 22, has no medical insurance and a fund has been set up at First Hawaiian Bank to help pay her medical bills, Bolla said.

The family told Bolla that Taylor visited her fiancee Saturday after she finished a 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. work shift. While driving to her mother's house in the Palmdale-Lancaster area, Taylor rear-ended a "motor-home or RV" at around 1 p.m., Bolla said.

"She fell asleep at the wheel, that's what her family told us," said Bolla, who added he believed Taylor was wearing her seat belt, wasn't drinking and that the driver of the other car was OK. "This is just a case of her being tired."

"Right now she's been in the same situation since we started calling on Monday," Bolla said. "All of our wishes and prayers are with her for a speedy recovery.

"The nurses I've spoken to said she's got a lot of positives going for her," Bolla added. "She's young, she was an athlete, and so she's strong and so we're hoping that everything goes right."

Taylor, a former point guard, completed her eligibility in March. She is one of just 15 players in UH history to score 1,000 points. She also ranks in the top 10 in eight career categories, including scoring, 3-pointers, assists and steals.
