ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
The beat goes on — and on

Advertiser Staff

Jake Miyasato, better known as "Jake the Snake," is a one-man cheering squad for local hip-hop — that's all he plays every Saturday night from midnight to 3 a.m. as host of the genuineHI show on KTUH. Are there enough recorded beats to fill three hours of airtime? "When I started my show in January 2006, I didn't have many CDs — it was a stretch. Now I have a CD case full of local hip-hop and I get three to five new tracks every week," says Miyasato, who also organizes the live hip-hop series "onthe1," sponsored by the University of Hawai'i Activities Council. Up next: "onthe1: FLUX" featuring veterans and artists fresh on the scene in UH's Hemenway Courtyard at 7 p.m. Friday. Tune to 90.3 FM or check out www.genuineHI.com to feel the HI.

ARCADE FODDER

Honolulu alt-punkers Temporary Lovers' boppy guitar anthem "Less Yap Yap" has made the cut of 65 dance-friendly tracks on Konami's just-released "Dance Dance Revolution Universe" video game for Xbox 360. The home version of the arcade game allows players to create their own dance steps, video backgrounds and compete in head-to-head dance-offs — via a movement-sensitive dance mat. "Less Yap Yap" joins a decidedly funky list of tracks from the likes of Depeche Mode, Chris Brown, Kylie Minogue, New Order and Jamiroquai. Have a listen to it at www.myspace.com/temporarylovers.

RARE WEAR

Modern Amusement owner Tomoko Suzuki carries rare-in-Hawai'i clothing lines such as Ando, WESC (from Sweden) and, of course, Modern Amusement. But she also is a champion of locally based designers. Chito Mastandrea is the creative mind behind Chit Chat — women's flirty tops, dresses, shorts, accessories and bags in fabrics such as cotton and linen ($30-$60). She also makes cool kids' clothes.

Modern Amusement: Hee Hing Plaza, 449 Kapahulu Ave., 738-2769, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. daily.
